International Covered in Light Day

Yesterday was The Day. Did you veil? If so, what was your experience while going about your daily life with a scarf on your head? If you feel so inclined, share your story/photo on the FB page or below in the comments.

If you are amongst the antagonizers, did your day get ruined because women wore a scarf on their head? Did your world get turned upside-down, inside-out? Did the Gods Themselves rage and fume?

No. None of it happened.

Women continue to cover their hair regardless of how many vile things drip from your fingertips onto the web, how many times you gnash your teeth in frustration over not being able to control us, or how many times you try desperately to shame us into getting back into line of what you deem “proper”.

Our lives don’t revolve around pleasing you.

A scarf does not oppress people. People oppress people.

I totally forgot. Instead I went to the hair dresser with a friend, who needed to cut of her but-length hair. And I died mine, and bought a lovely headband. It would have been interesting to have fully covered in the busy shopping craze that is my town on Saturday afternoons.

If you ever feel so inclined, you can do it any day :-)

When I first started covering I faced the dilemma of what to do when going to the hair dresser. Do I cover after having it cut and styled and looking so pretty? What I have found is that after having it dyed I don’t want to cover as much. Perhaps it’s my vanity of not wanting to cover up my new awesome hair colour.

Is it vanity to celebrate a beautiful thing? Unfortunately may hair doesn’t respond to dye very well. It remains super healthy but the difference after colouring is usually only minor. Still, I very much like my hair. At the moment I tend to fully cover when cleaning (tichel style) and during ritual (loosely draped). Otherwise I do not cover, though I now learn the joy of simple head bands. This isn’t really covering, more like dressing up my hair ;) So … I like to have different looks, and different rituals for different times. I am playful in my covering, not strict, and I like the world to notice this too.

Also, I like it when the world can see that a women can cover and not cover, and can switch in the middle of the day. I am tired of the whole fully covered vs. half-nude discussion. The more variety, the better. And maybe this is a small way to contribute to a change in thinking about the meaning of head coverings, which clearly, is not clear at all.
